We want to install a hang on the wall gas fire in our living room but the gas fitter said we first needed an air brick... is it best to get someone in to do this, how much should it cost, does it matter where it is positioned....

If it hangs in front of the existing fireplace on the chimney breast and we don't fully brick it up do we still need an air brick?

You need permanent ventilation for gas appliances, an airbrick or blackhole is normally the best and neatest way to provide this. They are normally positioned ta low level on an outside wall, behind a tv ot chair etc to prevent any draught being a nuisance, it doesn't matter how you brick up the fireplace you still need to provide ventilation.

If you're good at DIY - do it yourself, ensuring the duct is continuous across the cavity.
