Bathroom fan connection in loft using vent tile

by Teamperchpan1982 » Tue Feb 22, 2022 11:14 pm

Hi, I have had a mould problem and found my bathroom fan was just covered over with loft insulation. Have opened it up but obvious all steam is now going into the attic. In the attic is an old outlet metal tube leading to open tile on the roof to let fumes from old gas fire( this has been removed so a there is left is the metal tub from the roof which extends 1 metre into the attic at which point it has been disconnected). My question is could you attach the tube from the extractor fan to the end of the metal tube for the steam to go out? I realise that I would probably need a powerful fan as the distance would be approx 4 metres with a bend but would it work or is it allowed ?

Thanks

Peter

Hi teamperchpan1982,
Yes you can do this but make sure you make provision for dealing with condensation that will inevitably form in the ducting.

Hi teamperchpan1982,
Wrapping the pipe with insulation is unlikely to gain anything. You need to have the pipe coming up from the extractor and immediately going down again - so the pipe is like a giant S on its side. Condensation will form in the pipe collecting at the lowest point and hopefully this will evaporate off out the roof vent between on periods. If it doesn’t you will have to fit a drain at the lowest point or fit a trickle vent type fan.
Regards S
