Bathroom light pull switch + extractor fan

by Simoncollins » Mon Apr 16, 2007 8:05 am

Hi,

I needed to replace an old light pull switch in the bathroom which controls the light and the extractor fan

The new pull switch has 3 sockets (excluding earth) marked L and 1 way and 2 way. I have a single 4 core cable coming through the ceiling with (again excluding earth) red, blue and yellow strands

Can someone please confirm which strands should connect to which terminals?

Thanks in anticipation

Simon

Thanks for the speedy response but which terminals on my switch pull relate to 1/2/3 or A/B/C?

Hi Simon

It looks like you have the wrong replacement switch, if you have 4 cores at your switch then the switch you need is a double pole switch.
This type of switch has 4 terminals and is essentially two switches operated by the one pull cord. So that one side will operate the light and the other operates the fan.
The new switch you bought is a two way switch, so i'd see if wherever you bought will exchange it for a DP (double pole) switch.

Take note of what conductor goes where on the old switch before disconnecting it, use bits of tape to identify the terminal markings so replacing should be swapping like for like. I would imagine the switch terminals to be marked C1 & L1 and C2 & L2 or something along those lines.

Post back if you have further problems with it.

Thanks again for the advice and if only I had the old switch still connected!!!

I normally do make sure I am methodical with the wires but didnt envisage such a problem and just whipped it off.... stupid boy!

Will get a double pole switch but any further advice re terminals would be great

What a great website!

Cheers
S
