Battening Wall With Insulation and Issue With Door Frame

by Carl88 » Fri Nov 25, 2016 10:59 am

Hi,

I'm looking to install solid wall insulation by fitting a batten wall and filling the gaps with Celotex (or similar). However in the corners of the room the door frames are butted right against the wall and therefore would be obstructed by the timber studs.

I therefore want to understand whether the solution is to bring the frame out or whether there is another way around this?

Appreciate any advice and apologies if the above has been answered previously!

Hi Mate,
Could you please clarify construction of your wall? also how old is the building? If you building is traditionally build, eg solid stone or solid brick walls, permeable insulation need to be considered in order to prevent the moisture build up

Alexander

Hi Alexander,

Thanks for the reply. The house is an old build mid-terrace with solid stone wall.

Hi Carl,
You home is transitionally built with a solid stone walls. As traditional buildings need to ‘breathe’ the use of impermeable materials like EPS, Celotex, Kingspan, etc commonly found in modern buildings must be avoided, as these materials can trap and hold moisture and later create damp problems.

Hi Carl,
Carbon trust recommendation would be:

"In traditionally built properties with solid walls, it is recommended to use breathable (also known as vapour permeable) solid wall insulation materials as these allow continuous movement of air (vapour) and this helps reduce the possibility of moisture build up"

You could see the analysis of breathable or permeable insulation options attached.

Thanks. Are there any recommended ways to insulate/soundproof the internal walls?

Here are some of the most common ways to fit internal wall insulation yourself:
