Bay Window Balcony Repair

by When-Tool-Become-1 » Fri Jun 09, 2023 4:51 pm

Hi All!

Looking for some advice about how to repair a balcony above a bay window which requires levelling, and then tiling. At the moment, water collects in a small pool where it is not level (but is not leaking through). Any help, much appreciated! See photo for reference.

Thanks.

Hi wtb1,
Lift all the existing slabs ( only if you can do this without damaging the waterproof covering), clean off any bedding material and relay the slabs on cementious floor tile adhesive with the correct falls to the outlet, then grout in all joins and perimeter.

Hi StoneBoy,

Thanks so much for this!

Will the cement need to be on a slight angle for the water flow, or does not matter?

I was also going to buy new tiles- how do you recommend I would measure the space in order to then cut the new tiles to the size for the angles of the balcony? I have a multitool, so I was planning on using that.

Thank you again for your help!

Hi WTB1,
Assuming you will be using ceramic/masonry tiles or slabs lay them with a thin continuous bed at the drainage hole and make the bed thicker as you go away from it. Use a straightedge to check you have a continuous fall on the tiles. Try to space the tiles so you do not end up with a narrow strip.
Your multi tool will be useless for cutting tiles.

Hi StoneBoy,

Thanks so much for this. Noted on the multitool (haha)- I will buy a tile cutter. In terms of ensuring the tiles match the surface area, how do you correctly measure and cut them to that exact shape?

Thanks again for your help with this- massively appreciated

Hi WTB-1,
it’s the corner pieces which will be difficult cutting a piece of cardboard is the cheapest or buy a shape contour tool.
