Block Sinks Mystery - Both Kitchen and Bathroom Sinks not Draining Correctly All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

Hi,

Both my kitchen and bathroom sinks are not draining water. I had a plumber in the property last night who used very strong drain cleaner and a plunger to try and clear the blockage. His advise was the blockage is happening "far away" in one of the pipes leaving the building.

Recently we had a new water heater installed which is connected to both sinks. The old water heater had previously caused boiling water to flow into the toilet, and another plumber previously mentioned the toilet and water heater may be connected.

I am wondering if the current issue we are having could be related to the new water heater or are these completely separate and it sounds more like a blockage in one of the pipes?

The water heater should be tapped into the cold water system (probably under the sink) with (possibly) an expansion pipe being connected to your waste system.If the water heater malfunctions and the water boils, the steam should then escape to the waste pipe.

There is a small chance that this connection to the waste (if indeed this has been done) may have been done by drilling into the waste with the expansion pipe and the expansion pipe has been cut too long. This means the end of it may be causing an obstruction.

This however, while possible, is very unlikely but it is something that could be checked very easily by disconnecting the inlet from the water heater to the waste if it exists.
