Bracing a Large Self Built Wooden Gate

by tommysmith » Sat Jun 30, 2018 10:36 pm

hello, i'm going to build a set of wooden gates, these will be split 2/3's, one will be 8ft wide and one will be 4ft wide, frame will use half lap joints, both will be 6ft tall. my question is what would be the best/strongest way to brace the 8ft wide one, i know that you should go from bottom hinge to top lock side, but would one solid diagonal brace be ok with a horizontal piece for the lock in the middle, or should i do 2 (one bellow the horizontal and one above, same way) or even an "A" type design.

any advice would be appreciated.

thanks.
