Bricking Up Fireplace but Do I Need to Prop With Acrows?

by samnunn92 » Tue Nov 27, 2018 12:02 pm

Hi all - mid way through a fireplace removal and would really appreciate some advice.

I've taken the old tile/concrete fireplace out in our kitchen to reveal the cavity and what looks like a concrete flue lining. I'll try and attach some photos here:

My plan was to just brick up the cavity underneath (with an air brick too) and hide the protruding concrete bit with a shelf but I'm a bit worried that if I knock the ragged pile of bricks out on the left hand side of the opening the concrete piece will fall. I can't find a lintel above so as a precaution I was going to use trench props to hold while I lay the bricks below - is this overkill or is there a better way to do it?

Would really appreciate any advice on this as want to crack on with it but don't want the chimney coming down on top of me!

Cheers
Sam
