Building a media wall on internal wall

by TIMCSS » Thu Jul 07, 2022 9:14 am

Hi all,

I am converting my garage into a living space. It is an internal garage with a bedroom above. On the internal wall, we want to build a media wall out of stud work and plasterboard. Do I need to plasterboard the internal wall first, before building the stud work and plaster boarding the stud work or can I just build the wall the plasterboard that? Sockets will be installed in the stud work etc.

Thank you

Hi timcss
No need for studwork, build your wall and then dryline it.

Hi mate,

Amazing thank you for your response. On the external wall, will Building control ask me to add more insulation either PIRplasterboard or stud and insulation? Its got a cavity full of insulation. In a new build.

Thank you

Hi timcss,
The answer to your question gets rather more complicated depending on what you are proposing for the internal garage. If it's going to remain as a garage with a media wall ie it will not be a habitable room you can just dry line the wall.
If you are going to make it a habitable room and for example fill in the garage doors and add windows, you should get in touch with your local building control for advice. You may have to submit and pay for a building notice application before they will advise you.
Regards S
