Afternoon

I have a problem with pitted and mottled plasterboard walls. Not terrible but not what I want to paint over. I need to smooth the entire wall.

They just have old white emulsion on them

I asked a plasterer if he would skim it for me.

He advised I could do this my self buying a few bags of gyproc easifill. Skim the entire wall with a roller and smooth out with a knife.

Has anyone done this? The spread said it's the easiest way for the diy'er who doesn't plaster

Can you just go straight onto the painted wall with the filler?

Does it need a mist coat after?

What grit sandpaper and would you use an orbital sander?

If the issue is that there are lots of surface depressions then you should be able to face-fill them using a wide filling knife or caulking blade. Apply the filler and then drag over the blade a second time to remove excess from surface of wall. Once you have sanded the filler and given it a coat of paint you may notice areas that need further filling. It wouldn't hurt to thin down the paint a bit with perhaps 25% water depending on how porous the filler is. If there are bumps which are proud this is not something that can be disguised with filler - it would need to be sanded or scraped.
