Can't get plasterboard fixings to work for hanging curtain poles?

by janeblewis@gmail.com » Fri Nov 14, 2014 7:51 pm

Hi, have new loft conversion just been built. Want to fix poles to walls for curtains. Walls are usual stud construction with plasterboard and then skim coated with plaster. Tried using metal plasterboard fixing but it just chewed through the skim coating and never seemed to reach the underlying plasterboard. I panicked and pulled it back out of the hole.
My questions: if the skim coat is deeper than a metal plasterboard fixing, can i just use a normal wall plug or is the plaster skim not strong enough to hold the curtain pole? If i persisted with the metal plasterboard fixing, it will end up well below the surface which will not look right and the bracket for the curtain pole will not sit properly over the top of this hole. Am i completely on the wrong track here - should i be using some other type of fixing?
Please help.
