Caulk or sealant around bathroom skirting board/vinyl floor?

Post by DagDave » Thu Nov 19, 2020 11:02 pm

Just a quick question here, in my parents bathroom the skirting boards need repairing, noticed that there is a bit of a gap between the skirting boards and the vinyl floor, as shown in the one pic, there's also a slight gap between the vinyl floor and the shower base (also between a small cupboard and floor too) – is it worth filling this at all, either with caulk or a sealant?

Thanks in advance for any advice/tips!

Hi dagdave.
Well worth running a bead of clear silicone around the floor, it will stop water getting where you don’t want it.

Cheers for the reply, any particular one(s) best for the job?

One other question, should it be applied around the base of the toilet as well, and if so all around the base? (Seems to be train of thought that you shouldn't seal/caulk al the way around a toilet base in case it leaks)

Hi dagdave
I’d go for clear sanitary silicone which resists mould better.
Suggest you seal all round toilet pan so that the bits that miss are not left in the join festering.

Ah right cheers for that – one thing I did note, is that silicone can't be painted over (or it's difficult to do so) so it'll have to be carefully applied under the skirting board, steady hand needed!

Hi dagdave
No silicone cannot be painted. Suggested clear because it will not show very much. If you are not sure about you sealing skills use a line of masking tape 1-2mm above the bottom of the skirting, remove this before the silicone sets.
