? change boiler

by stronach » Mon Feb 10, 2025 4:26 pm

We have a Glow Worm gas boiler that was in our 3 bed detached house when we bought it as a new build in 1995. It has performed well, only breaking down 3 times, 1st when a little bird got in the exhaust flue through a broken bit and jammed the fan, so not really a boiler fault. Next was a failure of the igniter switch and had to be replaced, took 3 visits to sort that out, last one during the ' beast from the east' spell of freezing weather 3 yrs ago when the pcb packed up, again took 3 days to fix. My question is should we change it for a new one or carry on with this one, it won't last for ever though I knew a couple who had their gas boiler for over 40 yrs and was still ok when they had to sell up to go into residential care. If I change we would wait until the better weather assuming it keeps going until then. It has been serviced annually. What would experts advise? Also the Labour government has got in in for gas boilers so extra taxes may be put on new ones which is something to keep in mind.

I had old boilers, it was in the end changed because it was leaking, and the two boilers one for central heating and one for DHW were swapped for one combi boiler.

I had held back, as using a Myson fan assisted radiator, and was not sure how this would work with a modern boiler, I still don't, as sold the house.

The old boiler had a sensor to check the temperature of the output water, it did not matter how hot the return water was, as long as out water was cool enough. The Myson did not control the flow of water, output was controlled by if fan on or off, and speed the fan was set to, if room warm enough, then warm water was returned to the boiler.

There would in theory be nothing to stop running a load of Myson fan assisted radiators in series, but we tend to plumb homes in parallel fit by-pass valves, and use TRV's to control radiator output, so the big question is what other changes would be required if you changed to a modern boiler, as an electrician I can't answer that question, But you need to know if the system you have will work with a modern boiler.

Just saying the question was asked 6 months ago, so I would hope the boiler has been changed by now, not to mention the poster was last active 4 months ago so will never read your reply.
