Hi, we moved into a 1930s house last July and knew there was some damp showing on the corners of the brace. We chopped off the offending plaster and had that thick, tar stuff painted on. We have since had a stove installed into the chimney but we seem to have loads of salts coming through (see pics). I tried using acetic acid to treat it, but it clearly hasn't worked. We don't know if this is an issue with this chimney or if this is rising damp from underneath? We have also seen bubbling of the plaster next to where the skirting is still off, on the face of the brace. We don't want to decorate the whole thing to have to tear the plaster off again, but struggling to identify the cause! Any ideas on the cause and how we fix it? Thank you!
