Clearing a messy garden (need advice)

Post by tarpsuk » Thu Jun 18, 2026 8:41 am

Could really use some advice from the green fingered experts here. I’ve just moved into a new place, and the back garden is a total mess. It looks like it hasn't been touched in about five years. There are brambles everywhere, weeds taller than me, and what looks like an old patio completely buried under layers of dirt and moss.

Honestly, looking at it is a bit overwhelming and I don't know where to start. Should I just hire a heavy-duty shredder and clear everything to the ground, or is there a better way to tackle this step-by-step? I’ve got basic tools (spade, shears, and a weak electric mower that definitely won't survive this), but I'm willing to buy or rent what’s needed.

Any tips on the best order of operations would be amazing. Cheers!

Start at the closet edge and work forward.
A shredder will only reduce the volume of what you cut down, it doesn't cut it down for you.
I would also suggest:
A pair of Secateurs (Lighter and better than shears)
A pair (or two) of (thorn proof) gardening gloves
Safety specs (You only have One pair of eyes, and brambles can and do hurt)
A strimmer to cut down the grass
A Grass rake (yes, that is grass rake, NOT grass snake)
Pressure washer.
Garden fork
Hoe
Pot of elbow grease
Don't buy too cheap tools
Don't rush.
