I have an Elson oblong water tank in the airing cupboard upstairs, which started to weep on the downflow pipe joint where it connects to the tank (underside towards rear). this is the 3/4" pipe with a gate valve on it. we removed the pipe and fitting from the tank bottom after draining water, and replaced old fitting with an ******* fitting which cured the leek. after reassembly the tank was refilled and water heater fired up and reheated water. since the replacement job our water is only tepid although tank water is hot. The system is an old Johnson and Starley unit warm air and water heater (JB 40-50) downstairs, which supplies the tank. due to the inhibiting cost of a new tank (£700) we tackled the job ourself.
