coving on a bowed ceiling.

by Bluminati » Sat Dec 01, 2007 7:34 pm

I need to cove a ceiling in a 100+ year old house. the ceiling is bowed in all sorts of ways making application of the coving very difficult (for me anyway) as I cannot put up large pieces (they are like see saws) & mitres & edges do not fit together properly.

can anyone suggest a simple way of doing this?

Ive encountered the same problem myself a few times now....it drove me crazy at first!. They way i got around it was to buy the factory mitred corners, there more expensive than cutting the corners yourself ( which can be a right head ache ) but they will always match up and fit better and save you time, energy and probably money in the long run...also your sanity!!!. Especially external corners... As for fitting long lengths of coving, providing the bowes in the ceiling arent to much of a rise and drop you can simply fill and level any gaps in either the ceiling side or wall side with the coving adhesive and level it off as you go. A little coving adhesive on the joins in the coving also works well to hide any gaps. It might look shabby at first but after a little light sanding and a few coats of paint you wont notice it. This works well if the cieling and coving are going to be the same colour which the usually would be. I found that any joins in the legnths of coving dissappeared after a sanding with a fine grade paper and a few touch ups with the paint. The other more expensive option is level the ceiling and walls!!!!...ekk. Hope this helps my freind let me know how you get on.
