Have searched & couldn't find any advice so far, but first time here, so be gentle...
We're looking to knock out* our understairs cupboard as the hallway that runs down the side of the house is quite narrow, and natural light is also an issue.
The flat: ground floor of Warner style maisonette terrace, so two front doors next to one another, ours on the left goes into our hallway, theirs on the right leads to staircase. Blockwork 'floating' wall separates, running up the left-hand side of their staircase. Staircase not attached to wall, stop on our floorboards (have been underneath the house to check) and stops underneath the ceiling beams, so 99.9% certain it's not supporting.
Seems obvious way to do the work would be to cut out rectangular wall portion & studwork the angled section where their flat would be exposed (can't tell if that makes sense...!)
BUT could we also cut wall at angle & support blocks above with timber on diagonal? Seems a far less invasive way to do this as doesn't require access to upstairs, which is ideal. On good terms with them, and party wall agreement would likely go through etc. but they're fastidiously clean & would like to save them anxiety!
