I am fitting a dado rail in hall, stairs and landing about 1m from floor level.

If I use the ground floor rail level as a starting point for the rail going up the stairway wall, the measurement from the skirting board to the rail (at right angles) is about 200mm less than skirting board to rail on the ground floor.
If I keep the rail to skirting board measurement up the stairs the same as the ground floor, then the starting point for rail up the stairway will be about 200mm higher.
Does anyone know if there is an accepted practice in this or do you do just what looks right.
Any guidance appreciated.

No real "rules" for this but generally you would extend the dado beyond the last stair until it meets the required height for the dado on the landing. This is (usually) an extension of about 300mm.
