I am thinking of putting some decking onto my existing patio, is there any advice out there on how to get started, i would greatly appreciate any help!

What specifically do you want to know?!
Its perfectly OK to deck over the patio, and if the latter is sound ad very solid you can use it to your advantage.

Always be aware of you damp proof level if attaching to your house though and slope away from the house too (I think it is recommended 1:100 gradient).
