I'm planning on building a deck, but from my research, most of what I find is joists being pinned to beams purely with nails. All be it big nails but just nails. This kind of goes against everything I know from joinery. Like sure Id use nails for a wall or something non-load baring but joists on foundations? That makes me nervous and living in a fairly wet area of Scotland using metal when metals outside on structural things just make me nervous too. I was wondering is there a reason that they are using nails instead of say, using lapped joints, M&T's, hybrid dovetails or even using bridal joints for legs? Is it just for saving time, so that it's a quicker build or is there something else I'm missing here?
