Do I need planning permission for any size of extension?

by alison1971 » Mon Mar 30, 2009 12:49 pm

Hello

If a single storey, example, 10ft x8ft extension room was added to my prospective house that I am currently buying, would I require planning permission?
Is there a certain size etc that doesn't require permission? Or would I need it?

Thanks
Alison

alison1971,
Whilst the regulations were relaxed in Oct 2008 interpreting them is quite difficult. Assuming your property is not listed I suggest you sketch what you propose and ask your local planning authority.
The sketch should include dimensions, boundaries and height of adjoining buildings.

you can go out 3m from your property at single storey level with a 4m max height under permitted development rights. any bigger than this requires planning permission under new guidelines.

holboob,
There are lots of other stipulations - one of those is if the extension is closer than 2m to the boundary PP is required. It is not as simple as the 3m and 4m figures you gave.
