Do I need to insulate garage floor?

by thewallsare » Sat Jun 27, 2020 10:45 am

Garage conversion into an office space separate from the house.

Do I need to insulate the floor with the really thick boards? Currently, it is just concrete.

I don't want to raise the floor much due to the height of some props I need to keep in the garage.

I am thinking to either painting the concrete floor directly with some good paint or putting underlay and laminate on it which I suppose would be better for warmth.

Hi thewallsare
Your laminate floor will be the best option but use an underlay which form a DPM.

Thanks. Can you get laminate underlay which has DPM in them? Or would I need to lay DPM layer then put laminate underlay on top?

Hi thewallsare
You can buy underlay which forms a DPM the joins are double lapped with continuous adhesive.

Unfortunately your office will get very cold in the winter if you do not insulate the floor. Maybe look at using a good Multifoil insulation on top of the concrete and then an really good underlay and timber floor or carpet if you are stuck for space. If you can I would suggest you use Kingspan Kooltherm if you have the space.
