Door hinge-side jamb not vertical

Post by jamescrosby » Wed Jul 11, 2007 2:32 pm

I have to replace an internal door in a house that has subsided. Unfortunately the jamb on the hinge side is not vertical and the hole is wider at the bottom than at the top by about 0.75". The lock side jamb is vertical enough. Are there any special techniques for this situation? Would I be better adding a wedge-shaped fillet to the hinge-side jamb? Reversing the door is not an option.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi, Remove the architraves from both sides of the hinge side jamb. Cut some softwood wedges and insert them between the jamb and the brickwork and tap them in until the jamb is in the position you require. Secure the bottom of the jamb in the new position. Refit the architraves, but you may have to patch up the gap between the architraves and the skirting boards.
