Hi everyone,

We are currently about to lay a new drive way and path round the sides and back of the house.
Currently there is just stone down as its a new build.

Can we use 40mm thick paving slaps (Yorkstone) on the driveway?
In all the books i look in only block paving is available for driveways.

block paving is 50mm thick, so
If a layer of mortar is put under the paving slabs say 10mm thick will this be ok for the 40mm thick yorkstone slabs???

Please help.

No Andy. Any base for slabs or blocks needs to be a minimum of 50mm thick. Slabs can be used but they have to be laid in an absolutely 110% perfect way with every single square mm of underside of slab supported by the same thickness of bed. If only a few mm out then the weight of a car in one corner of a slab will tilt or crack the slab and once that happens the rest follow. This is why blocks are prefered because the wieught is never on just one block and is spread over several at any one time.
