Hi
I rewired my house before the new regulations came into force .Do I still need to have it certified and if so how would I get this done.I had a new consumer unit fitted by an electrician before doing this.

All houses are recommended to be inspected and tested every 10 years or change of occupier. This is to ensure there are no items which have either been missed or degraded and make the house dangerous. The only thing that Part P has done is to require the first inspection and test after installation to be registered with building control of the local council. You don't need to do this but if you didn't get the installation tested for your own safety then you should. Expensive meters are used to check for example the earth system and in many cases people inspecting and testing have found the earth either does not exist or not good enough. Metal pipes have been removed etc and no one has realized the earth has gone. Also of course insurance companies could ask to view the test results which are kept by both householder and installer and if you could not produce them there could be a problem on pay outs.
