Hi,

I am thinking of partitioning off the bottom of my stairs however this would require me to move a light switch. The problem I have is the stud work will cover the existing switch so I want to move the switch to a new position near the new door that will be fitted into partition wall.

My question would be about the connections required to extend cable?
Can I just use connector blocks or should the cables be crimmped or is there another method I should use.

Any advice appreciated

If you are going down that path you should definitely crimp. However, as you are going to have to chase out for the cable it would be better to replace the whole length of cable from switch to fitting.

The requirements state that all accessories should easily accessible for inspection. So that would rule out junction boxes or strip connectors.
You could crimp the joints or solder them together this would then need to be resin insulated but this would need specialist tools. There are junction boxes know as self maintaining which the regulation allow they cost about 3 pound but are not readily available on the market.
You could consider instead of jointing replacing the cable for one that was the correct length.
