Festoon Lights

Post by KIW » Wed Jun 03, 2026 7:59 am

Hi
I have purchased some outdoor festoon lights - a 50 metre string, LED lights. The string starts some 50 metres from the nearest power socket so I need to use an extension lead to run from the socket to the lights. Can you please advise what type (specification) of lead I need to use?
Thanks
Karl

I would not use an extension lead.
Lights and extension leads tend to get left outside "for a few days" this turns into a couple of weeks. Extension leads are for temporary use and are not suitable to be left outside.
I would suggest you have a new weatherproof socket installed where the lights are to be plugged in.

Thanks Mr White. The lights are for a wedding and will only be used for 1 or 2 days. When I say "extension lead" I mean laying a cable, along the garden perimeter, from the nearest power socket (with a plug at one end for the socket) and at the other end for connection to the lights.

Laying any cable on the ground is never a good idea, not only is it susceptible to water ingress it also becomes a trip hazard. Get a socket installed or move the lights
