Fixing wooden gates to brick pillars

by xwoodbot » Sat May 17, 2025 10:10 am

I've recently had the front wall rebuilt with brick pillars either side at the front of the drive.
I want to fit double wooden gates but fit them directly to the brick pillars.
I plan to fit the gudgeon pin brackets directly to the brick using 75mm masonry screws avoiding the mortar.
The gates will be approx. 1250mm L by 900mm H with a simple frame and 2 internal cross braces.
Will this be strong enough and stable?

Hi xwoodbot,
The success of your proposed fixing method will depend on how careful the brickie was to ensure good bedding and buttering of the brick courses. I suggest you drill right through the pillar and use some studding to fix the top brackets because these will be subject to the most stress.
