This isn't technically central heating but is a heating problem. My living room is around 11ft x 11ft and 7.5ft high. It's open plan with a 5ft x 9ft kitchen and a staircase coming off it. It also has a 5.5ft x 4ft double glazed window. At the moment we have a 2kw convector heater running to try and heat it up but it's still very cold. Is the heater too small for the area? I was thinking of getting an oil-filled or oil-free radiator but wasn't sure if it would make any difference or not – Please help!

A 2kw heater wont do much, this is a common problem with open plan areas, plus the staircase will act like a 'chimney' for the heat.

Do you have central heating ? or thinking of installing ?

you could put the details of your room into a btu calculator (these are easily found free online such as on diy.com) which will give an indication of the wattage output (as well as the BTU for radiators) required to heat the room.

if you are not installing a wet system then dotting a few smaller heaters around will probably be better than one.
