Full new heating system or not ?

by Rileyroo » Thu Feb 18, 2021 8:12 pm

After moving into a new home 3 years ago i thought a boiler service was well over due .
It’s a 1960s property semi detached 4 bedroom.

Got a plumber around to do the service from a very good local company.
£89 thought that was fair .

When he finished I asked him to do a visual inspection of the properties heating system(boiler , water tank , Rads (9)
His evaluation was .
The boiler has couple of years left in it .its a potterton supreme 50 .

Radiators are at least 30 years old and seen better days but still work even if some only doing half the job . Due to sludge and age .

His advice was that in the long run it would be cheaper to get a hole new system including rads and new Pipe work plus move the boiler .
He couldn’t give a guess price as his company doesn’t allow it and they have a person who does a survey and comes up with the quote . But by the way he was talking it would be very expensive.

When I asked if getting a flush and new Rads could be a option .
He said the flush could be a bit risky on the old pipe work . And eventually the new rads would just sludge up because of the old tank and pipes .
Left me a bit confused as I thought a flush got rid of most of the sludge from pipes and tank .

Suppose I am just wondering If his advice is correct or more of a sales pitch .
Or any opinions would be great

Hi rileyroo
Unless you have a few thousand that you are dying to spend suggest you upgrade what you have. The copper tube in old systems will have walls far thicker than anything you can buy today. If you haven’t got a system filter in place suggest you fit one.

Thankyou for your reply .

Yer unfortunately I don’t have a few grand burning a hole in my pocket at the moment .
I was thinking the cost would be around the 5 grand mark for the full job .
Might be wrong though as am not a professional.

By filter I take you mean a device like the magna-clean?.
If so think I will get a professional to fit one and have a go myself at fitting rads .

Hi rileyroo
Yes I was referring to a magnaclean thingy. Have a look at different manufacturers some are easier to take apart and clean.
