Glossing walls for easy cleaning

by Tcr1983 » Thu Apr 09, 2026 3:41 pm

I have very messy boys. My middle one, 11yr old, is autistic (like a toddler) and there are always handprints and smears on the walls: Pen, crayon, felt pen, food, general dirt, and occasionally poop 😭

I've been in my current property (new build) 2 years, and I've washed the (matt) walls so often there are now patches of plasterboard now showing!

Washable emulsion for kitchens and bathrooms just isn't tough enough, so I am very tempted to just gloss the lower half of the walls. (Ceiling height is 235cm, so I'd be glossing about 110-120 cm high in the hallway/stairs/landing area).

My concerns are the drying times/fumes, and also, as some chemicals I've used on cleaning the walls in the past have lifted the emulsion off the plasterboard in places, how should I prepare the wall surface.

What would be my best course of action to make sure the gloss adheres properly?

Thanks in advance
