Help - flat roof installation

by Mystic7 » Sat Jul 05, 2025 8:14 am

Sorry for the long post.

I had my flat roof done on my kitchen last year. However it was done badly and I've now had the roof redone by another firm.

With this second firm, I agreed to the estimate but when the guys arrived to do the work, they said it had been overboarded etc so it was going to cost more to get fixed.

The guy at the office called me and said it would be an extra £900 which I verbally agreed to. I wish I hadn't and to be honest, I don't see why I should as it was their fault for not assessing the roof properly in the first place.

As they were doing the work, they also damaged my kitchen ceiling which I'm waiting on them to come out and fix. A plasterer has been in contact.

As part of the job they also removed and replaced my gutter. Can someone tell me if the gutter would have needed to be removed and replaced as part of this job? I've lived in the house 4.5 years and the guttering has been fine but it is mentioned on the invoice and not on the estimate. I've outlined the main differences below

Sorry if I sound dim but I'm a young woman living alone and tradesmen, albeit well recommended, are not always reliable.

QUOTE:
-Remove existing roof cover and boarding.
- Fit new UPVC trims over top of fascia boards to include new Bridgestone Firestone Edges
- Remove all waste materials

INVOICE
- Removal of existing roof cover gutter and fascia
- Fitting of new timber battens
- Fitting of new UPVC fascia boards
- Fitting of new UPVC gutter

Thanks so much

Hi mystic7,
It is difficult to advise you based on the information you have provided. I’m sorry but you will be fair game as far as some tradesmen are concerned.
You are mixing the two terms estimate and quotation but they mean different things.
An estimate is the best guess your contractor can make on the work involved and the cost. Eg I will replace your flat roof for x amount.
A quotation should set out the works involved and the cost. Eg I will remove the existing roof and gutters; reform the roof using abc material and fit new gutters.
The estimated price is a flexible cost, the quoted price is a fixed price for the work involved but may be increased if extra work is found and not specified in the quote.
Replacing your gutters with new is probably more economic than fitting the old ones back.
Regards SB
