Hot water cylinder. All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

Hi,

I am after some information if possible regarding my current hot water cylinder.
I need to replace it but need to know what would be best to change it with. And can try to obtain some quotes, and know that I am getting what I need not overpriced equipment that i do not require.

Basically I have a copper cylinder with two immersion heaters, one at the top and one at the bottom. Although it is one cylinder it is split into 2 parts, i believe the top section should carry cold water, but the water is very hot and over flowing down the overflow pipe.
The cylinder has a cold inlet and hot/cold exit to the taps. An overflow at the top.

I would like to install a new more economical unit which is smaller. I have a 2 bed 1 bath&shower flat.
The current cylinder is about 5 foot.

I do hope this post makes sense and someone can provide some advice or recommend a trademan in the London area that can provide a qoute to supply and fit a new unit.

Its sounds like you have a combination storage water heater.

There are better and small hot water systems around now.

If you only have 2 bedrooms, your hot water requirements will be low.

I would say, that if you have an electric shower and don’t use a bath, a small un-vented water heater would do.

A directed replacement would be something like a Ariston primo stainless steel direct unvented 125 litres cylinder (£600)

But if it was me, I would say a Ariston wall hung unvented cylinder (100 litres) would be your best bet. (£550)

Thanks for the info: in regards to my old cylinder, it is a combination water heater.

I dont have an electric shower, just the mixer type from the bath taps. The missis does use the bath alot though.

Do i not have to replace it with a similar item. I know it needs to be direct as i have no gas supply. The two types of system you suggest would i be able to fit myself. As i would be confident in replacing the combi old one with a similar product. Is there much difference in the installation of the systems you mentioned.

Also i am looking at putting the flat on the market very soon, would the systems you mentioned be cost effective for me. Obviuosly i don't want to fit something rubbish but neither to expensive.

If your thinking of selling, get the cheapest one you can.

There no point on spending money on a good one if your going to be there less than 2 years.

Has far has piping it up goes, yes there easy to fit, but you should get an electrician to check the wiring.
