insulation under a thatch

Post by archedwarrior » Sat Sep 18, 2010 7:57 pm

Hello all you wise people. I am in the process of renovating a detached rural house with a thatched roof and I need loads of advice please. For starters, can anyone tell me about insulation underneath a thatched roof?

I have removed all internal partitions and ceiling on the first floor to create a huge open plan space with a cathedral ceiling. All supported with oak 'A' frames. At the moment the underside of the thatch is exposed and there is no felt.

So I need a layer of really effective insulation. I am planning on using Thinsulate stapled across the rafters. Then a layer of batons followed by plasterboard.

So here come the questions:

1) is Thinsulate sufficient on its own or should I also use something like Celutex as well? (the rafers are not very deep so it would be difficult to get Celutex in there).

2) Should I get some roofing felt up too?

3) Should I use fire-proof plasterboard?

Thanks people.

Thanks Welshbrickie and windowsill, that is really interesting. I have never heard of this product and all I can find on the net is an adhesive. Is Spraybond something you spray underneath the thatch? Do you know who makes it? Can I put plasterboard underneath? I would really like to know more.

...also, is Spraybond microporous? I understand that thatch has to be able to breathe?!
