Damp can be a major issue in the home. Find answers to questions or post your own here.

Is there a DPC - and if so, can it be raised up?

by ColinB73 » Thu Jan 19, 2023 8:46 pm

Bought property 6 months ago; looking at getting cavity walls insulated. House is in 3 sections (1850s solid wall cottage, 1960 2-floor section, 1970 1-floor room). The 1970 room had evidence of rising damp on purchase - we knew about it, and have had a DPC installed. However, the cavity wall company are wary about filling the cavities in the 1960 section because the floor level is really low to the ground and we don't know whether there is a (functioning or otherwise) DPC.

How can we tell whether there is a DPC? How much risk is there in filling cavity when DPC, if present, is low to ground?

Hi Colinb73,
Beg borrow or steal a damp meter and on a dry day check damp levels up the wall starting at ground level. At ground level you’ll probably get 100% damp, if you then go up brick courses and get a sudden reduction to around 50% then you have a working damp course between the two courses.
