I have a bungalow built in 1953 although the chimney looks as if it has been re-built. There is no lead tray in the stack. The stack is very tall, about 7-8 feet and only 2 bricks wide x 5 bricks. I wonder why the builder would not have put a lead tray in it. Could it be that the lead tray would have weakened the chimney? After all cement doesn't stick to lead. The question has arisen because there is water coming out of the stack mortar joints in the roofspace and making everything wet. It has rained for a month. A builder who I had out to look at it said;- "It's screaming lead tray" and offered to rebuild it for £2500 but said he would only make it half the height. I'm dubious about this because for one thing it wouldn't meet building regs at that height and it may not give enough draught. There is a wood stove installed with a stainless steel liner insulated with vermiculite.
