Leaking parapet gutter / wall

by peterboddy » Fri Jan 23, 2009 2:32 pm

We've recently had our roof repaired, including a new parapet gutter, that runs across the front of the house and incorporates a bay window. However, when subjected to rain and strong wind, water comes through to the room below, in a localised spot within the bay and also further along, both where the ceiling meets the wall. We have had the gutter looked at again, and by all accounts it's a good job.

I susspect that the parapet wall is solid rather than cavity, and initially I filled in some small gaps on the outside of it which seemed to help to rectify this situation at other points. Presumably the water was travelling through the wall somehow.

Is there a material, or liquid (Thompson's roof seal) that would be suitable for fixing / painting over the top of the parapet wall? Can anyone suggest any other possibilities for finding / fixing the leaks.

Many thanks

peterboddy,
Difficult to envisage the detail from your description. Parapet walls generally have a coping stone on them and the gutter should be taken up and under the copings.
If you did not have these leaks before the gutter was replaced then I would say that it is "not a good job".
