Live Earth in F.C.U

by Basil20 » Sun Nov 18, 2007 8:09 pm

Hi Guys,
i wonder if anyone can help
i was replacing my old fan with a new one in my utility room,
the old fan has only L & N and didn't require a earth the new fan is exactly the same and was connected from a f.c.u next to fan, so i thought it was easy enough to do myself, but when i checked inside the f.c.u the earth conductor which was connected to the metal back box was live,
the earth conductor is sleeved and L & N are secure in there terminals and i can't trace where the f.c.u is spured from,
can anyone explain what the problem may be and should i call a spark to come out.
Thanks in advance for anyones reply and also what a great website.

you have answered your own question "yes get a qualified electrician in to look at it"
No cpc should be live, you show have a reading of 230V between live & Neutral or 230V between Live & Earth you shouldn't have any reading between Earth & Neutral.

(note voltage can be between 230V - 240V + or - readings (depending upon the supplier)

If your not getting the results then please call in the pro's

How did you ascertain that it was live?
