Loft insulation - eaves gap? Information, help, tips and advice on cavity walls, ceilings and lofts etc....

Hi all,

Looking to fit loft insulation - its an old place we've just moved to and there is NO insulation - it's been a cold an expensive winter!

Anyway - had a thought - to maintain the gap around the eaves and to give some 'protection' to the insulation, any thoughts on nailing some wood to the roof supports (not sure what to call them - the ones running up to the ridge) to ensure a gap is maintained? I'm thinking just 2 or three lengths of your cheapest shiplap cladding? The air still comes between the boards and the roof (slate, no felt) and once above the level of the insulation it is as normal and free-flowing.

Anyone any thoughts?

Your suggestion is fine but will not stop insulation going down the gap between the ceiling joists. You might do better to cut pieces of ply to fit between the rafters. This way you can insulate right onto the wallplate - if the insulation is stopped short of the wall plate you will get a strip of cold ceiling around the outside of the room which will attract moisture.
Try to avoid nailing into the rafters this can break and/or disturb your roof tiles.
