Hi,

I'm about to start building a record storage unit out of MDF and i was wondering what would be the best way to hold it all together. My friend suggested using dowel joints, will they be strong enough? They will need to support a lot of weight as i plan to put my turntables on top of it too.

It'll be a simple rectangle 146cm long x 111cm tall x 46cm deep and made up of 12 storage cubes for the records

Hi, dowel joints wiill be plenty strong enough if properly made. Go for 18mm MDF for the carcase with 10mm dowels. That'll easily survive the odd turntable or two.

Finally make the top & bottom sit over the sides, not inside the sides. So if your dimensions are exact the height of the sides should be 111cm minus the thickness of the top and bottom. That way the sides support the top and you are not relying on dowels other than to hold the top in place.
