Missing electric seal

by carbar » Wed Aug 08, 2012 4:31 pm

I've just had someone in to fix my washing machine and before he did anything, he did a test on the electric supply in the kitchen. He said there was a problem with the earth as it was taking too long to trip.

He asked to look at where the supply was coming into the house. When I showed him, he said that the re-wiring of the house that was done before I moved in was illegal as the tails don't have a seal.

He said that I should contact my electric company to get them to put seals on.

He also said that the supply cables were very old (he mentioned about the metal box that the supply cables came in to) and that the electric company should update them free of charge.

However, he was happy to continue looking at the washing machine as the issue with the earth was because was had an earth spike.

Before I go and talk to my electric company, I just wanted to ask if anyone else had experience of this. Is there going to be any issue with getting the correct seals put in place, and will the electric company update the supply cables free of charge?

Thanks.

Carl

Normally they will. But if there is any work wanting to be done it would be better to get that done first as the last thing you want is to call the electric supply company a second time for missing seals.
