by Bosey » Sat Feb 07, 2009 10:21 am

Hi i am currently repointing the exteria of my stone house. I have started it but the problem I have is the mortor is drying too quick and is cracking.
any suggestions on how to resolve it and what is the best mix combination for pointing.

cheers

Bosey,
Presumably you have raked out some of the old mortar, you then need to hose out the joint, this will remove loose debris and dampen the blockwork ready for pointing. You will have to allow the blocks to partly dry before pointing.
The mix you use will depend on the colour you want to achieve, a basic mix is 6 parts building sand, 1 part OPC and 1 Part lime. You may need to try different sands before you get the right colour mortar.
end
