Moving Loft Hatch but Issued With Wooden Supports

by davenorwich » Sat Apr 15, 2017 3:36 pm

Hi

I need to put in a replacement loft hatch in a more suitable location. The width of the new hatch is 562mm the same as existing to fit between joists - no modification needed to joists. The issue is the wooden supports (don't know technical name) running across the joists adjacent to the rafters marked on the photos with X. The existing hatch shown in picture installed when built is reduced by about 80mm because these are at one edge.

I need to move the hatch over the other side of the loft as marked in red.

The new hatch is slightly longer but regardless of this still needs to be closer to the outside wall to the right due to room constraints but the supports will be in the way. Clearly they provide roof support with the metal rod attached to the outer wall so cannot just be cut. Any advice what to do about this, could that small section be moved elsewhere and still provide adequate support?

Thanks
