Need to Drill Between Two Tiles??

by fredthefifth » Mon Sep 13, 2010 7:10 pm

Hi All, one of the holes for a corner self has fallen on the grout line. The drill will nip the glazed ceramic tile each side. I have a faint recollection that is dodgy. Any advice on how to avoid cracking the tiles please?

Hi fredthefifth

What worked for me, which may not be the right way, but it did work for me ....(please correct me any tradesman with the full and correct answer if mine is way off)

I drilled a very small pilot hole in the grout using a normal high speed drill bit, I then gradually made the hole bigger untill the drill started to erode the edges of the both tiles, then I switched to anormal tile bit and SLOWLY drilled my hole to the correct size required, it took ages, but the tiles did not crack or lift.

The pilot hole kept the tile drill bit centred during the process
