New heating system advice required

by Stephanie » Mon Apr 28, 2008 10:16 pm

We have been living in a 4 bedroom house for the past 6 months and we currently have a "one way heating system". The radiators and pipework have not been touched for maybe 20 to 25 years. The boiler (Potterton Suprima 60) was changed about 7 years ago by the previous owners. We have asked several plumbers to have a look and they tell us we have to change the whole heating system, esp. that we want to add 2 new shower rooms. One of them is recommending that we put the bolier and the hot water tank in the attic. Does it sound right to you? We are so confused. We want to do the right thing but the price seems very high too. What are the questions we need to ask the plumbers to make sure we get the best of our current (or new, if appplicable) system? Many thanks in anticipation for your help and advice. :? Stephanie

It depends on the size of the current system, how many room and how many radiators ? Would the boiler cope with more radiators (are you fitting any?)

What type of showers do you intend fitting ?

will you just have showers or still have a bath ?

If you want to keep the bath and have 2 or 3 showers, are you planning on having electric showers ? or mixer showers from the hot water storage which will probably need to be pumped ?

If you want 2 mixer showers, and a bath then yes the system will probably be best upgraded to a better and more efficient boiler.

By one way heating system - do you mean one-pipe ?

Also if the PCB needs replacing on the potterton Suprima, they're not cheap neither is labour.

Hope this helps
