New home, need some help in the loft!

by Patrick67 » Mon Oct 08, 2007 5:00 pm

I'm new to the forum and I wasnt sure if I should post here, or in insulation...

Just bought a 1930's house that is a bit of a wreck and needs loads of work. I wanted to start at the top and work down.

The loft doesnt have any lining on the inside of the roof/ceiling of loft. This has allowed a huge amount of dirt into the loft.

I want to staple a lining onto the inside to prevent dirt coming in, clean it out, replace the insulation material, and finally board the loft.

Problem is i cant find any suppliers of the lining material, or any info at all about what to use or how to do it.

Hope you can help...

I am aware that in large areas of the UK, no sarking or tarred felt is installed below the roof tiles. The tiles are just nailed straight onto the horizontal timber straps.
Thermal insulation in this situation is available from specialist firms who spray quick-drying plastic foam onto the inner faces of the roof-tiles.
My neighbour has recently had her 3-bed semi re-roofed with new Sterling-board sarking sheets, tarred-felt, new timber straps, and new cast concrete Marley-tiles, at a cost of £6500 inc Vat.
That will last another 50 years, even in our storm-lashed north end of Scotland.
