A painter decorator has stained our new pine interior door with a light oak wood stain. However, the stain did not come out as intended and instead of light oak is mainly a greenish-black with only some of the graining in between coming out as light oak. The decorator himself has said that there is nothing to be done apart from replacing the actual door. Is this correct? Could we possibly sand it down and at least lighten the colour? Any advice and help would be much appreciated.

For anyone viewing this post in the future please heed the age old advice of trying stains and dyes on the top or bottom edge of the door first.

As far as this one goes you can try (on the top or bottom edge first) sanding down with some medium paper then rubbing hard with a cloth dipped in white spirit, or even better, solvent thinners. It sometimes works but often leaves a patchy finish depending on how deel the stain has soaked into the grain.

You could always paint the door rather than throw is away
