The pump in the airing cupboard seems very noisy. It sounds like a "gritty" noise? It's impossible to sleep in the bedroom next to it as the sound vibrates through the wall. It is currently on setting number 2, I have tried turning it down to 1 but then the boiler makes a noise as though it's not getting enough water.

Sounds like it's had its day - if old, get it swapped.
Also check water levels in system!
