Painting over oiled wood

Post by Johna7770 » Mon Jun 02, 2008 5:56 am

I'd like to paint over a wooden door which has been previously treated with oil (e.g. Danish oil or Tung oil).

I've tried scraping and sanding back to the bare wood, but the oil appears to penetrated deeply and I don't seem to be able to get rid of it all. (Plus the sanding disks just get quickly clogged).

Is there something I can use to prime the surafce so that it's then ready to paint with oil based satin wood paint?

You can certainly put linseed oil paint over wood that has been oiled.

Tung oil (the main ingredient of 'Danish oil') is not very different from linseed.

Cheers
